Video Game Character Heights in Real Life: Mario, Steve, Kratos & Master Chief Visualized

How tall are Mario, Steve, Kratos and Master Chief in real life? Verified official heights — Mario 155 cm (5 ft 1 in), Steve 187.5 cm (6 ft 2 in), Kratos 193 cm (6 ft 4 in), Master Chief 208/218 cm — compared side-by-side and against the average human.

Key Measurement Summary

Master Chief in his MJOLNIR armour (218 cm / 7 ft 2 in) towers over the shortest gaming icon, Mario (155 cm / 5 ft 1 in) — a 63 cm gap. In between stand Kratos at 193 cm (6 ft 4 in) and a surprisingly tall Minecraft Steve at 187.5 cm (6 ft 2 in), each figure verified against official statements from Xbox, Santa Monica Studio, Nintendo and Halo canon.

Core Takeaway: Video-game heights are design decisions, not measurements: Steve’s 6 ft 2 in comes from an official Xbox post that overrode years of fan estimates, Kratos was quietly shrunk from 7 ft 6 in to 6 ft 4 in for the Norse reboot, and Mario’s 5 ft 1 in comes from Nintendo’s own official figure. Treat every number below as canon — not physics.
Tallest of the four Master Chief (armoured) — 218 cm (7 ft 2 in)
Shortest of the four Mario — 155 cm (5 ft 1 in)
Biggest surprise Steve — 187.5 cm (6 ft 2 in), 5 in above the average US man

The Full Lineup: 63 cm Separate Mario from Master Chief

Four of gaming’s biggest icons span more than two feet of difference — and the order will surprise you.

Ranked by their officially confirmed heights, the lineup runs: Master Chief in MJOLNIR armour (218 cm), Kratos (193 cm), Minecraft Steve (187.5 cm) and Mario (155 cm). The 63 cm gulf between the tallest and shortest is wider than the full height of most toddlers — and the order contains at least one shock. Ask a room of gamers to rank these four by height and almost nobody puts the blocky Minecraft avatar second.

Ground the numbers against real people. The average US man stands about 175.3 cm (CDC NHANES), so Steve is a full 12 cm taller than average, Kratos clears him by 18 cm, and armoured Master Chief looms 43 cm above. Mario, at 155 cm, is 20 cm below the average US man — and a touch under the average US woman (162.6 cm). If you want international flavour: the Dutch, the world’s tallest nation, average about 183 cm for men, which still leaves them 35 cm short of Master Chief in his armour.

These are not fan wiki estimates dressed up as fact. Every figure below comes from an official or canon source: an Xbox announcement for Steve, a Nintendo-licensed figure measurement for Mario, a Santa Monica Studio technical breakdown for Kratos, and the Halo novels for Master Chief. Where the sources disagree or the canon has changed — and it has, more than once — you will find the caveats spelled out, not buried.

Mario at 5 ft 1: Gaming’s Shortest Icon

Four decades of adventures, and Nintendo’s official figure puts Mario below the average woman.

Mario’s official height is 155 cm (5 ft 1 in), based on Nintendo’s own licensed figure measurement — a figure the manufacturer described as matching the character’s actual height per the games’ background story. That makes the most famous plumber in history shorter than the average US woman (162.6 cm) and 20 cm shorter than the average US man. It is a number that surprises people who grew up watching Mario tower over Toads and Koopas — but in-universe, almost everything in the Mushroom Kingdom is also small.

A word of honesty, because Mario’s height is the fuzziest of the four. Scale in the Mario series has never been perfectly consistent: an official life-size figure sold elsewhere measured 150 cm (4 ft 11 in), the Mario Wiki documents his height varying across games and media, and Super Mario Sunshine jokingly lists his height as “unknown”. The 155 cm figure is the most widely accepted official number, but it is best understood as Nintendo’s stated canon rather than a physics measurement — fitting, for a character who grows and shrinks by eating mushrooms.

What makes Mario’s shortness interesting is how deliberately Nintendo designed it. Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto has discussed making Mario compact next to the realistic humans of New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey; the plumber is an underdog by stature, and the games lean into it. Stack him against our other three icons and the effect is dramatic: Kratos is 38 cm taller than him, Steve 32.5 cm taller, and Master Chief in armour an absurd 63 cm taller. Mario does not just stand below them — he barely reaches Master Chief’s shoulder.

Steve Is 6 ft 2: Minecraft’s Quiet Giant

The blocky everyman of Minecraft is five inches taller than the average American man.

Of all the numbers in this article, Steve’s is the one that breaks brains. In October 2021 the official Xbox account posted Steve’s measurements: 6 feet 2 inches, or 1.875 metres. That makes the default Minecraft avatar a full five inches (12.5 cm) taller than the average US man (about 5 ft 9 in / 175 cm) and taller than the average Dutch man (183 cm). The blocky everyman — the avatar millions of players see as themselves — is, canonically, a genuinely tall man.

The reveal overrode years of settled fan wisdom. Steve’s in-game hitbox is 1.8 metres, and the old community consensus pegged him at 5 ft 9 in — the model is 32 pixels tall and fans had done the pixel maths to death. Microsoft’s official 1.875 m figure settled it overnight, and it is worth pausing on what that implies: roughly a third of Steve’s height is his enormous square head. Every mob, door and two-block jump in Minecraft is scaled to a 6 ft 2 in protagonist, which quietly explains why the world feels slightly oversized.

Stack Steve against the rest of the lineup and he holds his own better than anyone expects. He is 5.5 cm shorter than Kratos — a gap that would vanish in boots — and 32.5 cm taller than Mario. The only character that makes Steve look ordinary is Master Chief in armour, and Master Chief makes almost every human on Earth look ordinary. If you play Minecraft, you have been seeing the world through the eyes of someone noticeably taller than you probably are.

The surprise, visualized: Steve (187.5 cm) stands a full five inches above the average US man (175 cm).
💡 Official beats fan maths

For years fans calculated Steve at 5 ft 9 in from his 32-pixel model. The official Xbox figure — 6 ft 2 in — overrode all of it in one post.

Kratos Was Shrunk: From 7 ft 6 in to 6 ft 4 in

The God of War’s height changed between eras — and the reason was storytelling.

Kratos’s current, Norse-era height is 193 cm (6 ft 4 in), confirmed in unusual detail by Santa Monica Studio lead character technical artist Axel Grossman in a Gnomon technical breakdown of the 2018 God of War character model. That is the Kratos of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök — the older, bearded father travelling with Atreus — and it makes him 18 cm taller than the average US man and 5.5 cm taller than Steve.

Here is the twist the internet loves: Kratos used to be much taller. In the Greek-era games (the original trilogy and spin-offs), Kratos stood around 7 ft 6 in (229 cm) — a towering comic-book demigod built for power fantasy. The Norse reboot deliberately brought him down to human scale, and the reason was casting-shaped: the developers wanted Kratos’s proportions to match his new voice and motion-capture actor, Christopher Judge, who stands about 6 ft 3 in. A 7 ft 6 in father trying to have a quiet emotional scene with a 5 ft 7 in Atreus would have been a different game entirely.

The redesign also rebalanced Kratos against his world. In Ragnarök he is no longer the biggest thing on screen — Thor stands about 7 ft 4 in and Tyr a staggering 8 ft 5 in, both towering over him, which sells the underdog stakes of the Norse saga. Kratos at 6 ft 4 in is still intimidatingly large for a human — comfortably above the 97th percentile — but he is a man among gods rather than a god among men, and that is exactly the story the games wanted to tell.

💡 Two canon heights, one character

Greek-era Kratos: ~229 cm (7 ft 6 in). Norse-era Kratos: 193 cm (6 ft 4 in). Always check which era a source is describing.

Master Chief: Two Heights in One Character

6 ft 10 in out of the suit, 7 ft 2 in in it — the armour adds four inches.

Master Chief — John-117 — stands 208 cm (6 ft 10 in) without his armour and 218 cm (7 ft 2 in) inside his MJOLNIR powered assault armour, per Halo canon established in the novels (The Fall of Reach, The Flood) and repeated across official character profiles. The suit adds roughly four inches of plating, servos and shield generators — which means the height most people picture when they think of Master Chief is the armoured one: a full 43 cm above the average US man.

That 208 cm unarmoured figure is itself remarkable, and it has an in-universe explanation: John-117 is a SPARTAN-II, one of the children abducted and put through the UNSC’s augmentation programme, which rewrote his body with carbide-ceramic bone grafts, muscular enhancement and more. He was described as a head taller than his peers even as a child. The augmentations made him freakishly tall; the MJOLNIR armour made him a wall.

For real-world context: at 218 cm in armour, Master Chief stands taller than all but a tiny fraction of professional basketball centres, and he would clear a standard interior doorway (about 203 cm) only by ducking — which, to be fair, the games show him doing. Against our lineup he is in a class of his own: 25 cm taller than Kratos, 30.5 cm taller than Steve and 63 cm taller than Mario. If these four ever stood in one room, everyone’s eyes would be on the green armour, and not just because of the colour.

Why Video-Game Heights Don’t Always Make Sense

Statues, dev comments and novel descriptions: how these numbers actually get decided.

Notice something about this article’s four sources: none of them is a tape measure. Steve’s height came from a social media graphic, Mario’s from a merchandise figure, Kratos’s from a technical artist’s YouTube breakdown, and Master Chief’s from tie-in novels. Video-game characters are not built to consistent real-world scale — they are built to look right on screen — so their “official” heights are really just the numbers their creators were willing to commit to. That is why Mario’s figure can wander between 150 and 165 cm across media without anyone at Nintendo losing sleep.

This also explains why characters can look wildly different from their stated heights in-game. Kratos at 6 ft 4 in feels enormous on screen because the camera frames him against shorter mortals and the gods that dwarf him; Mario at 5 ft 1 in feels heroic because the camera stays low and the world is scaled to him. Game scale is emotional, not architectural. The numbers are still fun — and still worth getting right — but they describe the character sheet, not the pixels.

So use this article’s figures as the best available canon, with the caveats attached: Mario’s 155 cm is Nintendo’s accepted figure amid acknowledged variation, Steve’s 187.5 cm is official Xbox canon that overruled the 1.8 m hitbox, Kratos’s 193 cm applies to the Norse era only, and Master Chief’s headline number is the 218 cm armoured figure. Line them up in the visualizer above, add your own height, and settle every pub argument about who would win a staring contest — in height terms, at least, it is Master Chief by a landslide.

💡 How to read game heights

Always ask which version of the character a number describes: the era (Kratos), the armour state (Master Chief), or whether it is official canon vs in-game hitbox (Steve).

Questions About Video Game Character Heights in Real Life

Common questions and reference measurement data.

How tall is Minecraft Steve in real life?

Steve is officially 6 feet 2 inches (187.5 cm) tall, confirmed by the official Xbox account in October 2021. That is five inches taller than the average US man. Note that his in-game hitbox is 1.8 m and older fan estimates said 5 ft 9 in — the official figure overruled both.

How tall is Mario?

Mario’s accepted official height is 155 cm (5 ft 1 in), based on an official Nintendo-licensed figure measurement described as matching his actual height in the games’ background story. His scale varies across media — one official life-size figure measured 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) — so treat 155 cm as Nintendo’s stated canon rather than a universal constant.

How tall is Kratos in God of War?

Kratos is 193 cm (6 ft 4 in) in the Norse era (God of War 2018 and Ragnarök), confirmed by Santa Monica Studio technical artist Axel Grossman. In the older Greek-era games he was around 229 cm (7 ft 6 in); the developers deliberately shrunk him to better match voice actor Christopher Judge (about 6 ft 3 in).

How tall is Master Chief?

Master Chief (John-117) is 208 cm (6 ft 10 in) without his armour and 218 cm (7 ft 2 in) in his MJOLNIR powered assault armour, per Halo canon from the novels. The armour adds roughly four inches of plating and systems.

Who is the tallest video game character of the four?

Master Chief, by a wide margin: 218 cm (7 ft 2 in) in his MJOLNIR armour. That is 25 cm taller than Kratos (193 cm), 30.5 cm taller than Steve (187.5 cm) and 63 cm taller than Mario (155 cm).

Why is Mario so much shorter than the others?

Different universes, different design goals. Mario was deliberately designed small — an underdog plumber in a world scaled to him — while Kratos, Steve and Master Chief were designed at or above heroic human scale. Their heights were set by separate creators for separate games, so the comparison is fun but was never meant to be consistent.
