Celebrity Couples With the Biggest Height Differences, Visualised to Scale

Celebrity heights are notoriously slippery: agencies round up, actors add inches, and footwear does the rest. For this ranking, every height was verified against at least two independent sources — celebrity measurement databases, news outlets, official bios and, where available, the stars’ own statements. Where sources disagree, the table uses the consensus figure and marks it with an asterisk: Kevin Hart, for example, is listed anywhere from 5 ft 2 in (157 cm) to 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) while he personally claims the higher figure, and his wife Eniko Parrish is consistently 5 ft 7 in (170 cm) — taller than him either way.

The ranking produces some surprises. The largest verified gap in celebrity history — 87 cm between Verne Troyer and Genevieve Gallen — is nearly double the gap of the runner-up. The biggest gap among couples still together belongs to Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson and Kelsey Henson at 49 cm. And four of the twelve couples reverse the usual pattern, with the woman the taller partner — a fact that search data shows fascinates people more than almost anything else on this list.

For perspective on what counts as “big”: a study of 12,502 British couples published in PLOS ONE found the average height difference between partners was just 14.1 cm (5.5 in). Every couple in this table exceeds that — the smallest gap here, Zendaya and Tom Holland’s 5 cm, still lands below the population average, which is exactly why their pairing draws so much comment.

The all-time record belongs to Austin Powers star Verne Troyer, who stood 81 cm (2 ft 8 in) tall as a result of cartilage–hair hypoplasia, a form of dwarfism. His wife of five weeks in early 2004, model Genevieve Gallen, is 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) — a gap of 87 cm, wider than the entire torso of an average adult. Photographs of the two together remain some of the most visually startling couple images ever taken precisely because no lens trickery is involved: the difference is pure biology.

The biggest gap among couples still together is almost half that, but more dramatic in motion. Game of Thrones star Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, 206 cm (6 ft 9 in), married Kelsey Henson, 157 cm (5 ft 2 in), in 2018 — a 49 cm difference. Zendaya (178 cm / 5 ft 10 in) stands about 5 cm taller than Tom Holland (173 cm / 5 ft 8 in), and their pairing — dating since 2021, with engagement reports surfacing in January 2025 — has become the defining example of the “short king” era of celebrity discourse. Articles explaining that yes, she really is taller, rank among the most-read celebrity height pages on the internet. The chart above shows why the photos confuse people: 5 cm is barely visible to the eye, especially when Holland wears anything with a heel.

The most striking woman-taller pairing on this list belongs to Peter Dinklage (135 cm / 4 ft 5 in) and his wife, theatre director Erica Schmidt (168 cm / 5 ft 6 in) — a 33 cm gap in her favour. Married since 2005, they have consistently refused to treat it as remarkable; Schmidt told Rolling Stone that Dinklage is simply “incredibly handsome, charming, funny” and that “the rest of the world has to catch up.” It is the clearest celebrity rebuttal to the idea that height gaps need explaining.

Two more flipped pairs complete the picture. Tom Cruise (170 cm / 5 ft 7 in) is a full 10 cm shorter than his ex-wife Nicole Kidman (180 cm / 5 ft 11 in), to whom he was married from 1990 to 2001 — a gap that tabloids obsessed over for a decade. And Kevin Hart is shorter than his wife Eniko Parrish (170 cm / 5 ft 7 in) however you count his height: the comedian’s listed figures range from 157 cm to 163 cm, and he has built an entire comedy career out of owning the difference.

Researchers have documented what they call the “male-taller norm”: across cultures, people overwhelmingly prefer the man to be the taller partner — but not too much taller. A PLOS ONE analysis of partner height preferences found that the largest acceptable gap for both sexes was the man being about 17% taller than the woman, and that actual couples cluster just under that ceiling. In other words, evolution nudges couples toward a gap, then caps it.

Whether the gap brings happiness is a subtler question. A study published in Personality and Individual Differences analysed more than 30,000 people across two Indonesian longitudinal surveys and found that husbands were, on average, 10.9 cm taller than their wives — and that each extra 10 cm of difference was associated with a 3.9% increase in wives reporting they were “very happy”. But the effect decayed with marriage duration: after about 18 years together, the husband’s height advantage had no measurable impact on happiness at all.

That fading effect may explain the cultural arc of the “short king” conversation. Early in a relationship, height differences are visible, commented on, and — the data suggests — genuinely felt. A decade in, couples like the Dinklages or Zendaya and Holland stop being a height story and become simply a couple. The gap that launched a thousand listicles turns out to be one of the least durable facts about a relationship.

Two editorial notes on what this list leaves out. Wladimir Klitschko (198 cm) and Hayden Panettiere (157 cm) would have ranked near the top with a 41 cm gap, but we have deliberately excluded the pairing following Panettiere’s death in August 2026, aged 36. And Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker — often cited in height-gap listicles — do not belong here at all: Barker is consistently listed at 5 ft 9 in (175 cm), not 6 ft 3 in, which makes their gap an ordinary 23 cm. Claims need sources, even in celebrity gossip.
